http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2009/jun/26/alcohol-disease-death-rate-europe
Summary:
Research indicates that approximately 1 in 10 deaths in Europe is caused by the effects of alcohol, while this is 1 in 25 globally. Previous statements, saying that drinking some alcohol a day is good for your heart, have been overstated. The beneficial effects of alcohol on the heart and artery system are only of any use to the elderly. Although the use of alcohol has been around since the beginning of written history, due to the mass production, the amount and regularity of consumption has risen drastically. On the whole, men drink more than women, with a difference of almost 5% in mortality rate.
My view:
As a fervent non-drinker I think it's psychotic that people drink themselves to death, either by kidney/liver-failure or driving and drinking. Especially when they cause accidents while drunk, killing others and themselves. I must say that the numbers surprised me greatly. I thought that they were at least a little lower. The fact that men drink larger amounts of alcohol than women was something I expected, however. It is a well-known fact that men drink more often and larger quantities than women. Nonetheless, I think it's a great idea that there are plans to decrease the deaths caused by alcohol.

Dear Ronald,
BeantwoordenVerwijderen1 out of every 10 is number that really surprised me! As a matter of fact even 1 out of every 25 amazes me, I never thought this many people would die because of alcohol use by either themselves or others.Like you I expected that men would drink more than women. You mention that you think it is a great idea that there are plans to decrease deaths caused by alcohol but I can't find any possible solutions in your article or summary, could you give any?
Kind regards,
Jelmer
